Learn Life-Saving Basics at AHA Heartsaver CPR/First Aid on October 21st

When an emergency strikes, sometimes quick thinking is all it takes to save a life. In order to jump into action, however, you need to know what to do. The AHA Heartsaver CPR/First Aid class on Saturday, October 21st equips people with zero medical training to provide support that could save a life.

Designed by the American Heart Association (AHA), this class certifies participants 16 years and older in life-saving CPR and first aid techniques. Pupils will learn how to appropriately administer CPR to infants, children, and adults. CPR is an effective way to keep the lungs and heart working until emergency medical personnel can take over. Class attendees will also learn what to do if someone chokes, how to use an AED, and what to do for simple cuts and scrapes. The class costs $35 and includes a certification of participation after successful completion. It will be held at the Texas Health Rockwall Medical Office Building from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fireside Chicken and Tacos: This Mix of American and Mexican Fare Will Tantalize Your Taste Buds

No meal at Fireside Chicken and Tacos is complete without a trip to the salsa bar. It's stocked with authentic salsas crafted according to co-owner Oscar Espinosa's own recipes, from the mild salsa roja to the extra-fiery habanero salsa. After you order a plate of street tacos, step right up to the salsa bar and embellish them as you like.

The salsa will only serve to accentuate the existing flavors in tacos stuffed with steak, grilled onion, cilantro, and avocado or chicken in red al pastor sauce with pickled red onions, pineapple, and cilantro. Breaded fish, spicy shrimp, and buffalo chicken are a few of the other proteins that star in Fireside's tacos. But you may want to skip the tacos and go for the rotisserie chicken or wings instead. The eatery is just as popular for its poultry as it is for the Mexican street food.

Burn Calories, Then Replace Them With Brisket at the Rib, Rub, Run, and Roll on October 7th

Smoke Smith BBQ, All Sauced Up, and The Sausage King are just a few of the Rockwall-area eateries that will be grilling and smoking meats at this year's Rib, Rub, Run, and Roll. On Saturday, October 7th, you and the rest of Rockwall's barbecue lovers can taste what they've been cooking in downtown Rockwall.

But before you feast, prepare your body by burning some calories. The 10K, 5K, and 1-mile fun run start at 8:30 a.m., taking participants all around Rockwall. After the run, come back to the starting line and enjoy live music, a car show, and, of course, fresh barbecue. Official judges will make most of the calls regarding the best brisket, most tender spare ribs, and perfectly smoked chicken, but the public is invited to cast their vote for the best wings. Buy a package of five tasting tickets and exchange each for a carefully crafted wing in the designated cooking tent, then cast your vote.

Shop, Win Prizes, and Enjoy Refreshments at Downtown Rockwall Night Owls Shop Late Til’ 8

When Rockwall residents asked for more flexible business hours, the boutiques and shops of downtown Rockwall listened. In October of 2013, the first Downtown Rockwall Night Owls Shop Late Til’ 8 unfolded, during which local shops stayed open until 8 p.m. so that customers could make it after work or dinner. The initial night was such a success that the tradition has continued once a month.

The next Night Owl event is scheduled for Monday, September 14th from 6 to 8 p.m. The extended hours are honored at many of the downtown Rockwall shops, and they're just a part of the appeal. The shops that stay open also offer door prizes, refreshments, and often special sales. Just look for the owl outside the door of a business that signifies it's participating in the event.

Milner Pilates Studio Fosters Fitness in Rockwall

Milner Pilates Studio creates a space where everyone can leave any stresses of daily life at the door and spend an hour focusing only on themselves. The instructors use the time-tested practice of Pilates, a fitness approach pioneered by namesake Joseph Pilates. It helps create a stronger core and deepen self-awareness through a series of moves linked to breathing.

The instructors keep classes small so that each pupil receives the attention that he or she requires to master every move. Classic mat sessions are taught almost daily throughout the week, and they're capped at 10 attendees—whereas equipment classes are held only three times per week. The latter feature Pilates-specific equipment designed to intensify your workout, and they're limited to five students. You can also schedule a private or semi-private Pilates session for even more attention at this individual-focused fitness studio.
